There are many different ways to clean carpet and upholstery. Today we'd like to share with you one of our most popular methods for washing a carpet. We often use this strategy to remove odors and bad smells from old and heavily used carpets. If done right, these simple steps are restore your carpet to their fresh and new state.
Before you start, make sure you put a day aside for your carpet cleaning. During this day, you do not walk people to walk on the carpet to potentially bring in more dirt and debris.
- To start, you'll need to find a large bucket or some other container which can hold a large amount of water. Mix some laundry detergent or laundry soap with the water. Do not use too much detergent - roughly a cup per pale of water. Make sure to use powdered detergent only (no liquids).
- If you happen to have a shampooer or a carpet steamer (steam cleaning) - you may want to use it for these steps too.
- You'll also need a common house vacuum cleaner. If using a vacuum cleaner with a bag - make sure to use a brand new bag. Vacuum the floor while it's dry to remove loose dust and debris. You'll need to make sure to get rid of any large particles and bits of garbage from the carpet. You can use a brush if you have to.
- Next, use a cloth to soak it in the detergent water and dampen the carpet area that is most dirty. Try to remove any lint and dust that may be there ahead of time.
- Take a brush, or a scrubber and attack the stains from various angles. This is most needed for the really dirty parts or parts which have been stained for long periods of time. Repeat this process for all parts of your carpet.
- Find some dry fabric or cloth and use that to dry up the affected areas. Try to soak up as much liquid as possible.
- Get a bucket of fresh, clean water and go over the same areas again with clean water - brushing them along the way. It's important to remove all the detergent from the carpet as left over detergent may wear our and ruin your carpet. Then let the carpet dry over night. You way want to open some windows to let the fresh air help dry the carpet faster.
- The detergent will give your carpet a fresh, clean smell and you should end up with a sparkling clean floor.
- Once the carpets are completely dry - vacuum the area one more time. This will give your carpet a much freshes and puffier look.
Remember to also clean the floor under your carpet. Loose matter left beneat the carpet may stain or crackle your carpet once it gets wet. This may result in dark patches and continual stains.
We do not recommend using vacuum tassels or fringes. These fringes get sucked into the vacuum and then cannot be vacuumed very well.
And most importantly - if you ever make spills or stains on your carpet CLEAN THEM UP RIGHT AWAY. Use a wet towel to moisten and scrub the area immediately after a spill occurs. This will ensure that your carpet can be properly steam cleaned by a professional.
